Frequently Asked Questions

Treatment in a recovery home is a guaranteed benefit of public health insurance plans in Massachusetts. If you are not on one of these plans, the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health will pay for the cost of your treatment. Even if you have another form of health insurance.

While admission criteria may vary between recovery homes they all require:

  1. You must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Are not currently intoxicated or experiencing withdrawal.
  3. Be both mentally and physical stable enough to not be a safety risk.
  4. Want to participate in treatment and are seeking a structured and supportive 24 hour per day program.
  5. Are able to recognize danger and has the ability to follow emergency egress plans.

If you are in need of detoxification or other forms of substance use disorder treatment, contact the Helpline.

Each program has its own specific daily course of treatment, but you will participate in both individual and group counseling while living in a substance free home-like building. You will develop your overall treatment plan with your Individual Counselor and as you progress through treatment you will return to work and seek housing that will support your recovery when you complete your treatment in a recovery home.

Recovery homes are staffed 24/365 to support the physical and emotional safety of all and provide support for your recovery.

All recovery homes strive to provide care in alignment with best practices currently known in the field of addiction treatment.  They are all contracted with, inspected by, and Licensed by the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Insurance company contracts provide additional guidance to ensure you receive the best care possible.

Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) is a widely used tool to support people in recovery. Whether or not medication is a good option for you is a decision you make with a doctor. Staff in recovery homes support all avenues to recovery in support of each individual’s treatment plan.

Recovery Homes will work with you to ensure you continue to take any prescriptions that you are legally prescribed. In order to ensure the safety of all patients, recovery homes store and secure all medications in accordance with state regulations and work with patients to record when medications are taken.
