The Men’s Hello House in the South End pioneered residential treatment in the 1960s. Today, it continues to be on the forefront of innovations in care. The Men’s Hello House serves up to 24 men in a clean, compassionate, and community-oriented environment.

About Us

A nonprofit organization based in Jamaica Plain and in operation since 1934, VOAMASS serves 1,800 individuals and families annually and employs nearly 200 dedicated and diverse people throughout Eastern Massachusetts.

We are deeply committed to improving the lives of individuals including veterans, older adults, and those who struggle with behavioral health issues, homelessness, unemployment, or involvement with the criminal legal system.

Our residential treatment for mental health and/or substance use disorders (MH/SUD) is customized to each client: we tailor treatment to individual goals and provide wraparound care to address not only MH/SUD needs, but other factors that may be preventing our residents from achieving optimal wellbeing, like unstable employment or housing.

The VOAMASS residential treatment team consists of clinicians, care coordinators, and recovery support specialists. We provide trauma-informed care through a harm reduction approach. While in the program, residents participate in support and education groups, individual counseling, and case management. They have access to medication for opioid use disorder and medication for alcohol use disorder (MOUD/MAUD), employment and housing services, recovery support navigators, and recovery coaches – among many other services. Additionally, our program staff works hard to ensure that we are providing specialized care to all populations, including individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community and those involved in the criminal legal system. All are welcome at VOAMASS.

Admission Criteria

Men who are at least 18 years old with a diagnosed substance use disorder and mental health condition. Applicants must also have experienced at least one of the following events:

Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization
Two emergency room and/or behavioral health emergency services program visits
Unsuccessful engagement and/or inability to succeed in other community-based services due to psychosocial or clinical complexity

Gone through withdrawal management and any symptoms of post-acute withdrawal are manageable in a community setting.
